Neutron backscatter

Neutron backscatter scanning

Neutron backscatter scanning is one of the inspection techniques that is useful for tanks vertical/horizontal vessels, tanks, and pipeline in petroleum and petrochemical plants. Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) can identify the height of sand, sludge, and deposits accumulated in your equipment.

The scanning results of the neutron backscatter scan represent the quantities of hydrogen contained in the vessel/tank. Which contained H2O liquid hydrocarbon, emulsion, and vapor. This allows for the estimation of sand and sludge accumulated in the bottom of vessels, and the scanning results can be used to plan for equipment shutdown and the removal of sand and sludge.

Not only the height of any phase in the vessel be detected, but the neutron backscatter technique can also applied to measure moisture.

Advantage

  • On-line inspection, without the need to shut down equipment.
  • Reduce time of turnaround/shutdown.
  • Preventive maintenance.
  • Fast operation.

Scanning results

  • The height of sludge/deposit.
  • The height of phase inside the tank and vessel.
  • The moisture in the insulation.
